MEET THE AUTHOR

Cover ImagePostcard from Truskawiec Spa was presented by author George Oscar Lee on May 18, 2008.

George Oscar Lee was born in 1924 in Poland.  In June 1941 he ran away to Russia just ahead of invading German troops. He joined the Polish Army, and participated in the Liberation of Warsaw, reaching Berlin in May 1945. He is the author of four books and many short stories and poems.

In this historical novel, Emilia Rubinstein, the only child of a wealthy entrepreneur in pre-war Poland, leads a carefree, privileged life. While vacationing in Truskawiec, she meets the handsome, young Czartoryski, presumably of noble birth.

Czartoryski charms his way into the Rubinstein family, claiming his own family lost all wealth. The Rubinsteins object to the relationship due to the difference in religion. Nonetheless, they help him financially for the sake of their pampered daughter.

The romance is soon interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. Emilia is caught into the web of the Holocaust and is forced to mature quickly. She becomes separated from her parents and every day is a struggle for survival.

She assumes an Aryan name and joins the Underground. At the same time, Czartoryski’s greed and anti-Semitism brings out his opportunistic nature. Emilia learns that her former lover is responsible for the death of her parents. Czartoryski denounces her to the Gestapo.
